Review - Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho Ep.1

For the first anime of 2018 we get not a sequel, nor a second season or a spin-off, but an original creation from Studio Madhouse with a rather outlandish plot - four girls who travel to one of the most remote places on Earth, the South Pole

Most slice of life type series that contain a "Let's Travel!" story normally has the main cast go to someplace either just a train ride or plane ride away, and usually somewhere interesting, exciting and/or extravagant, but the South Pole? All that's there is just ice, right? Why make the effort?

That's what many people think of Kobuchizawa's plan, and you must admit it does sound weird, especially with all the extra planning you have to do and things you have to prepare for - subzero temperatures, incredibly strong winds, blinding sunlight, and even the polar bear or two - and how much it would cost.

But like Tamaki Mari, there's also the intrigue of it. A continent so close but so strange, so otherworldly beautiful and mysterious, the chance to go there and explore it is enticing, especially to someone like Mari who barely has the courage to even play hooky. And not just that, its also a once-in-a-lifetime deal, which many of us had dreamed of, of getting to do something exhilarating, something we've always wanted or never thought possible.

Of course, the beginning of their trip is still just that - beginning steps - and we still have two more characters to go before the cast can cast off, but so far the first episode has been... well, a fun trip which I'm hoping will continue to embark on into something more memorable than just being an anime with an interesting plot (Don't let us down, Madhouse).

Speaking of characters, personally I must admit I would love to see more of Kobuchizawa Shirase's story, with all the hardships she has had to face and overcome, but hopefully they'll show more of that in future episodes since I must admit I prefer her over Maki, but hopefully we'll see more development on Maki as more than a energetic gal as the series goes on.

By the way... Really Madhouse? Doing product placements for your other anime No Game No Life? Really? ^^;

Summary: Dreamless girl and girl with a big dream - the start of a mind-boggling trip to the South Pole gets a pretty good start into its journey in the first new anime of 2018.

Animation: Very well done, though there are some moments of distraction caused by background
Music: Enjoyable, especially the OP (Loving it ^_^ )
